Brewers: Three up, three down
By VIC FEUERHERD 608-252-6175
MILWAUKEE - Some highlights, and low points, from the Brewers' 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night at Miller Park.
THREE UP ...
It pays to know
Joe Torre, the Los Angeles manager who started his playing career here with the Braves, packed a top coat for his three-day visit and used it as he walked in the city made famous by the phrase "Cooler by the Lake." "Everybody was envious," Torre said of those in the Dodgers traveling party expecting more L.A.-like weather.
A walk is as good
Brewers pitcher Carlos Villanueva drew his first-career walk in 42 at-bats in the fifth inning and ended up scoring the first of three runs in the frame on Ryan Braun's double off the left-field wall.
Dodging the big one
In six of his seven previous starts, Villanueva had at least one inning in which he has allowed more than one run, including four-run innings in each of his last two starts. Not this time, though, as he allowed single-digit tallies in the first, third and fourth.
... THREE DOWN
It worked this time
There were quite a few surprised people when Eric Gagne got up in the bullpen and came in to capture the save with a scoreless ninth. But Gagne should thank Mark Sweeney and Juan Pierre, both of whom went after the first pitch for outs, including Pierre for the final one with two on base following a walk to Andruw Jones.
Mental break
There seem to be a number of players getting "mental breaks" from their managers these days, and add Jones, the L.A. center fielder, to the list. Jones (.170) pinch-hit in the ninth inning.
That looks bad
Corey Hart has the green light to steal, so it didn't come as any great surprise that he tried to snatch third after a one-out double in the fourth. He was snagged by catcher Russell Martin and it looked even worse when Bill Hall followed with a full-count home run that cut the lead to 3-2. Hart is 5-for-8 in steal attempts.
