Brewers: Three up, three down

MILWAUKEE - Some highlights, and low points, from the Brewers' 7-5 victory over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Three up

A royal smash: This is the Prince Fielder fans got to know and love last year. He capped a great week with a two-run, game-winning home run, his sixth in the last 11 games. It was his 34th of the season.

Backing the boss: Prior to the game, manager Dale Sveum strongly defended his decision to put Mike Cameron in the leadoff spot. On cue, Cameron responded with two doubles, including a seventh-inning hit that gave the Brewers a 4-3 lead. "He's my leadoff hitter until death do us part,'' Sveum said after the game.

Making it possible: Catcher Jason Kendall had already failed once with a runner in scoring position but not in the eighth, when he lined a double over the head of right-fielder Steve Pearce to score J.J. Hardy and knot the game at 5.

Three down

An ugly inning: Starter Dave Bush needed 41 pitches to wade through the second inning, a frame that featured three walks, including a four-pitch pass to Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens. Bush allowed three runs in the inning but made it through the next three innings without giving up a run.

Poor timing: Reliever Guillermo Mota had been on the wrong side of the boos through July before running off a streak of 19 appearances during which he had allowed just one run. But this night, he issued a leadoff walk in the eighth and then gave up a two-run homer to Pearce that put the Brewers in a 5-4 hole.

Fundamentally unsound: The Brewers scored their first two runs courtesy of two Pirates errors in the first inning. Left fielder Nyjer Morgan was unable to handle Cameron's leadoff liner and center fielder Nate McClouth made a wild relay throw that allowed Ryan Braun to go home after his triple had scored Cameron.
