Brewers: Three up, three down from Game 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Three up and three down from the Brewers' 3-1 loss to the Phillies in Game 1 of the NL Division Series Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park:

THREE UP...

Good comedy: The Phillies mimicked the Brewers' sausage race in the sixth inning with three "racers" wearing a bun and hot dog costume sponsored by a local meat company. One racer dropped out shortly after the start. Another was eliminated near the Brewers' third base dugout when a Randall Simon look-alike whacked him with an oversized plastic bat. The final racer, cruising to the finish line, was tackled by the Phillie Phanatic, who then raced to the tape and was declared the winner.

Good morning, good afternoon, good night: Carlos Villanueva made an impressive playoff debut, retiring all seven hitters he faced. In the seventh, he struck out the side, all swinging. Villanueva's performance was part of very good relief effort by the Brewers. Mitch Stetter, Manny Parra and Guillermo Mota also chipped in as the quartet held the Phillies scoreless on one infield hit over the final four innings.

One bright spot: If the Brewers can take anything out of this loss, it's that they forced Phillies closer Brad Lidge to throw 35 pitches in the ninth inning. That's quite a workload for one inning and could put Lidge's availability for Game 2 Thursday night in some question. Lidge was 41-for-41 in save opportunities during the regular season.

... THREE DOWN

Bad comedy: The Philadelphia Inquirer, the highly regarded newspaper here, tried to be funny in much of its coverage of the Brewers in Wednesday's paper. Aside from the usual cheapshots about beer, cheese and cows, the headline on the story about starter Yovanni Gallardo read, "Now starting for the Brewers ... who?" The story was accompanied by three pictures and asked the readers to identify which one was Gallardo. The other two pictures were of Geovanny Soto, the Cubs catcher, and Yanni, the musician.

Questionable decision: The second-guessers were out in force by game's end about manager Dale Sveum's decision to start Rickie Weeks at second against left-hander Cole Hamels. Weeks' error in the third -- he dropped Bill Hall's throw at first for what would have been the second out -- opened the door to the Phillies' three-run inning. With switch-hitting Ray Durham available, the question is why start the weaker-fielding Weeks at all.

Best pitch, worst result: Corey Hart struck out to end the game with the tying run in scoring position on what was probably the best pitch he saw from Lidge. It was a 93 mph fastball right down the pipe that had little movement to it.
