Brewers blog: Corporan and those feisty Pirates
By TOM ZIEMER

MILWAUKEE — Here’s a bit more on catcher Carlos Corporan, who the Milwaukee Brewers promoted from Class AAA Nashville after backup Mike Rivera’s ankle sprain sent him to the disabled list.

As I wrote in tonight’s story, Corporan was in a Nashville-area mall when he got a phone call from Nashville manager Don Money. Money asked him where he was, and Corporan’s response apparently was “What’d I do now?”

After he got off the phone with Money, Corporan said he called his grandfather in Puerto Rico who raised him. His grandfather started crying when he heard the news, and Corporan said he started to tear up as well.

“Extremely enthusiastic,” Brewers manager Ken Macha said when asked about Corporan. “He loves the game, got a great arm, is good on balls in the dirt. His M.O. is he doesn’t swing the bat very well, but there’s a lot of guys that are backup catchers in the big leagues that can catch and throw, so he fits that bill.”

Pirate problems: It’ll be interesting to watch the Brewers’ two-game series in Pittsburgh early next week after some of the comments from both sides during this week’s tilt at Miller Park.

First, Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun was upset after being hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh’s Jeff Karstens in the opener, saying “Tell Mr. Selig that we’ll see what happens. It’s going to be interesting.”

That prompted Pirates pitcher Ian Snell, who struck out Braun three times Wednesday, to say, “You shouldn’t say stuff like that. You should just keep your mouth shut because it might come back to bite you in the butt.”

Pittsburgh first baseman Adam LaRoche was then asked about Brewers starter Yovanni Gallardo after his 11-strikeout performance in Wednesday’s 1-0 Milwaukee win.

“Go talk to the home-plate umpire,” LaRoche told reporters, speaking about Marty Foster. “He seemed to like him. See what he has to say about it. Old Marty back there, he was on his game today.”

Macha was asked about both Snell and LaRoche’s comments during his pregame session with reporters Thursday. Here’s what he had to say:

Of Snell’s: “If one guy’s opening his mouth and telling somebody else to shut their mouth, I’ll just take that with a grain of salt. So there’s no comment on that. How can one guy tell somebody else to shut up? Come on.”

Of LaRoche’s: “The guy was behind the plate for both teams. And I’m going to go on record (with) what I normally say about these umpires. They are being graded every move they make.”
