Northern Illinois pitcher Brian Smith will be leaving the Madison Mallards next week to undergo Tommy John surgery, general manager Vern Stenman said.

The right-hander hasn't pitched this season for the Mallards, but has batted .158 in 19 at-bats as a designated hitter.

Stenman said Smith is traveling to Birmingham, Ala., for the surgery, which will be performed by the renowned Dr. James Andrews.
