Mallards blog: Week in review
By TOM ZIEMER
The Madison Mallards just can't stop winning at the moment, and are closing in on first place.

The Mallards are 6-1 over the last week, and have won six in a row to cut the Wisconsin Woodchucks of Wausau's lead in the Northwoods League's Southern Division to a single game heading into tonight's game against Green Bay at Warner Park.

There are six games remaining in the first half of the season, so we'll see if the Mallards can edge the Chucks for the South title and the corresponding playoff berth.

The Mallards (18-9) host the Bullfrogs for two games, then finish the first half on the road with series at Mankato and Battle Creek.

On to the awards ...

Hitter of the week: Brandon Wikoff — This was a tough call, but Wikoff edges Aaron Bray. The Illinois shortstop was 10-for-26 (.385) with five runs and seven runs batted in.

Pitcher of the week: Gabriel Shaw — The freshman right-hander from Louisville posted two quality starts, allowing two earned runs and six hits in 13 innings.
