Mallards blog: The title race
By TOM ZIEMER
Tiebreakers won't decide the Northwoods League first-half Southern Division champion.
That's because the Wisconsin Woodchucks, who are tied with the Madison Mallards for first at 20-11, have three games remaining, while the Mallards have two.
The Mallards lost a game when they were rained out in La Crosse, and that contest won't be made up until the second half.
The Woodchucks play a doubleheader in Waterloo tonight, and face the Bucks again tomorrow. Those games are being played at a high school field in Waterloo because Riverfront Stadium isn't yet ready after experiencing massive flooding.
The Mallards, meanwhile, are in Battle Creek for two games. So it's possible they could win out and not tie for the title, because Wisconsin could finish a half game in front if it wins out as well.
La Crosse, a game back of both at 19-12, is in Brainerd for two games. They'll also be a game short.
The first tiebreaker would have been head-to-head record, according to Mallards general manager Vern Stenman. Madison is 2-0 against Wisconsin and 1-2 against La Crosse.
As a colleague pointed out last night, it seems rather silly that there is a set date for the end of the first half — shouldn't the team's record after the first 34 games just be used? And I agree.
Consider this: The Woodchucks and Mallards could each win their next three games, and Wisconsin would win the South by a half game. That third win for the Mallards would be in the first game of the second half.
