Packers: Thursday morning practice update

GREEN BAY -- Here's a quick-hit look at the news of the day from this morning's practice at Packers camp:

> Thin on defense, the Packers signed linebacker Stryker Sulak, a sixth-round pick by the Oakland Raiders this spring. As a senior at Missouri in 2008, Sulak (pronounced SHOE-lock) had 55 tackles, including 15.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. He also led the NCAA with six forced fumbles.

The 6-foot-4, 251-pound Sulak was given No. 47. To make room for him on the roster, the Packers placed tight end Tory Humphrey (broken arm) on injured reserve.

> Coach Mike McCarthy gave a host of veterans the morning off, although they are all expected to practice tonight. Those excused from the morning practice: Cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Al Harris, outside linebacker Aaron Kampman, nose tackle Ryan Pickett, wide receiver Donald Driver and tight end Donald Lee.

Also sitting out the morning session as part of their one-a-day schedule were safety Atari Bigby, center Scott Wells, left tackle Chad Clifton and defensive end Cullen Jenkins.

Running back DeShawn Wynn (knee) returned to practice for the first time this week and worked behind starter Ryan Grant and No. 2 back Brandon Jackson. Continuing to sit out practice were outside linebackers Clay Matthews (hamstring) and Jeremy Thompson (stinger); cornerback Pat Lee (back); wide receivers Ruvell Martin (groin) and Patrick Williams (hamstring), although Martin did return to action later in practice; and defensive ends Justin Harrell (back) and Johnny Jolly (ankle).

Inside linebackers Nick Barnett (knee) and Brad Jones (back) remain on the physically unable to perform list, while nose tackle B.J. Raji, the No. 9 overall pick, remains unsigned.

> Rookie draft picks Jarius Wynn and T. J. Lang got into a couple of mild skirmishes during practice, the second requiring teammates to break it up.

> McCarthy wouldn't tip his hand on how much the starters will play in Saturday night's preseason opener against Cleveland at Lambeau Field, saying the coaches were scheduled to meet at 4:30 to discuss playing time.

> McCarthy called the center competition between Wells and Jason Spitz "a tight battle," and that the nighttime practice would factor into who gets the start against the Browns.

> While McCarthy said no one has been officially ruled out for the game, he intimated that Clay Matthews, Jeremy Thompson and Justin Harrell are unlikely to play.
