GREEN BAY -- Wearing his signature wide smile, Donald Driver proclaimed himself "happy" after his first OTA practice, but the Green Bay Packers veteran wide receiver did not deny that he wants the Packers to restructure the remaining two years of his contract.
The State Journal reported last week that Driver was missing the OTAs to demonstrate his desire to have his contract reworked.
"I'm not unhappy. I'm not unhappy," Driver said. Asked whether he wants his contract reworked, however, Driver replied, "Yeah. What's wrong with asking? They (the Packers) can say no. I'm asking for it. If I get it, I get it. If I don't, I don't. It's no big deal."
Driver, 34, has two years remaining on his current deal, which calls for him to make $3.9 million in base salary this season and a $4 million base salary in 2010. He has a $2 million roster bonus for this year -- $1 million of which has reportedly already been paid -- and a roster bonus of $2.8 million in 2010. Portions of those non-guaranteed roster bonuses are tied to him being on the active 45-man game-day roster each week.
"I can say this: It's not about adding years on," Driver said. "I'm not asking for any extra money. No extra money." Asked if he wants roster-bonus money that's not currently guaranteed to be converted into guaranteed money, Driver replied, "Yeah, you could write it that way. I want my contract reworked, but that's all. I have a job, and I'm happy about that."
