Politics blog: Baraboo Lawmaker cited in crash cancels event today
A day after freshman Rep. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo, struck a bicyclist with his car, he cancelled a high-profile event in his district.
Clark was to set to tour the Cardinal Glass Industries plant in Portage with Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan, D-Janesville, and hold an informal reception for business leaders where they would outline tax incentives for businesses passed as part of the state budget this summer.
Clark hit a bicyclist with his vehicle Tuesday near the state Capitol and was cited for running a red light. The bicyclist, a 56-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Madison police said.
Clark knows the bicyclist, he told the Baraboo News Republic.
"It's obviously upsetting for me. The gentleman who was the bicyclist was also a friend and colleague of mine, somebody who I've known for some time," he said. He said he did not want to release details about who the man is, but said he spoke to his wife Tuesday.
