Politics Blog: Health care reform opponents plan Madison meeting
John Stossel, the ABC reporter and commentator, will be the key speaker at three meetings next week, including one in Madison, sponsored by a conservative group opposed to Congressional health care reform plans.
The Wisconsin chapter of the Americans for Prosperity Foundation is organizing the meetings.
The group opposes federal legislation in the works that it says will create "government-controlled" health care. Proponents argue the reforms will reduce costs, possibly through a new government health insurance option. Backers of health care reform held a march in Madison earlier this month.
The Madison event with Stossel takes place Wednesday at the Madison Marriott West at 6:30 p.m. Other events are being held in La Crosse and Wausau the next day.
The meetings target Reps. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, and David Obey, D-Wausau, who have been invited to the meetings.
Some meetings in other parts of the country on the health care bill held by members of Congress in recent weeks have gotten heated, including shouting and shoving. Kind is holding meetings in his district, while Baldwin is conducting telephone conferences with constituents.
