Alumni Update: Sun Prairie's Muller thrives as Iowa baseball freshman
Kurtis Muller, a freshman from Sun Prairie, has been the only everyday freshman starter this season on the University of Iowa baseball team.
Muller, an interdepartmental recreation management major, has spent most of his time playing in leftfield for the Hawkeyes (20-27), but has also seen action in centerfield as well. He is seventh on the team in hitting, batting .310 with three home runs and 40 RBI -- only three away from tying the school freshman RBI record set by John Knapp in 1986.
Muller has also been hit by 14 pitches, which is one away from Kevin Hoef's Iowa freshman mark. He has also drawn a team-high 21 walks and is second on the team in sacrifice bunts (six) and sac flies (five).
Last weekend against Minnesota, Muller went 7-for-16 with five runs and three RBI in a four-game split with the Gophers. That series concluded with a 17-14, 11-inning game in which Oregon native Dustin Brabender stared for Minnesota, but did not factor into the decision after allowing four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.
