Prep Talk: Sadie Ewing to Winona State ... and more
Another Ewing from Verona is heading to Winona (Minn.) State to play an NCAA Division II sport.
Point guard Sadie Ewing, who led the Wildcats to their first WIAA state girls basketball tournament appearance in March, has signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball for the Warriors. She joins De Pere native Natalie Taylor, who is transferring to Winona State from Division I Southern Illinois.
"Sadie will give us depth at the point-guard position and has the ability to pressure the ball on defense and push the ball in transition offense," Winona State coach Scott Ballard said in a statement. "She is a good athlete with toughness and a great work ethic."
"Sadie is a great person and a very good student who knows how to compete and win. She is a good fit with our style of play and we are excited about her decision to be a Warrior."
Ewing's older sister, Chelsey, is a three-year member of the Winona State softball team. She is a pitcher who just helped the Warriors to a second-place finish in the NCAA Division II North Central Region Tournament.
Beloit's Monahan to Washington University
Beloit Memorial's Brianne Monahan has announced that she will attend Washington University in St. Louis and play women's basketball for the Bears.
"We are thrilled with Brianne's decision to attend Washington University," said Washington University coach Nancy Fahey, a Belleville native. "She represents all the qualities of a true student-athlete, displaying a unique ability to combine athletic and academic excellence."
Monahan, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 14.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game as a senior at Beloit. She made the Wisconsin State Journal all-area team and was a two-time all-conference selection.
Washington University went 19-8 last season and made its NCAA Division III record 19th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the second round.
Coaching changes for East soccer, wrestling
David Harris, a familiar name in area soccer circles, has been named the boys soccer coach at Madison East, according to East Side athletic director Dave Kapp.
Harris, who is also the girls soccer coach at Madison La Follette, played semi-professional soccer in England for six years and coached it for four years. He also is involved in college soccer as the director of officials for Conference USA and the Northern Athletic Conference and also assigns officials for the Big East Central, which includes Notre Dame, Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette and De Paul.
Meanwhile, East has also named Frank Zuerner as head wrestling coach. He replaces Paul Blair, who resigned.
Zuerner, who is also an assistant football coach at East, was previously head wrestling coach at McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas. He has also coached wrestling at Madison West, Richland Center, and Madison Memorial.
