Prep Talk: Stock in chest paint could plunge if this rule gains
If you're like me and find it cute when six, say, six student fans from Barneveld show up at a WIAA state tournament basketball game -- or any indoor sporting event, for that matter -- with their stomachs and chests bearing the letters "E-A-G-L-E-S," then you're not going to like this news.
There is a measure up for consideration on the upcoming WIAA Board of Control agenda that would force those students to keep their shirts on. The proposal from the WIAA sportsmanship committee recommends "that bare-chested individuals will not be allowed at any regular-season or state tournament series indoor event" and received unanimous support from that group.
Sportsmanship will dominate the docket in two weeks at Green Lake. Also up for consideration are proposals that would:
- Ban artificial noisemakers from all regular-season and WIAA tournament events. We take that to mean the days of the cowbell at prep football games are numbered.
- Require game officials to report to the WIAA cases of unsporting/inappropriate conduct of spectators at games.
- Require school administrators -- including district administrator or principal and athletic director and coach -- to meet at the WIAA offices in Stevens Point with executive staff for "discussions regarding multiple reports of unsporting behavior regarding their school."
