Prep Talk: Mallards' return forces preps to juggle WIAA schedule
As they do each year, Madison East, Madison La Follette and Madison Edgewood spend all of April and May breaking in the infield dirt and watching the outfield grass turn green at Warner Park.
And then Warner Park's primary tentant -- the Madison Mallards -- returns and the transformation of Warner Park into the friendly confines of "The Duck Pond" begins. But not without conflict.
Madison La Follette and Madison Edgewood are both scheduled to play WIAA regional semifinal games Tuesday, but only one will play on its home varsity diamond.
La Follette's Division 1 semifinal game with Watertown will be played at 2 p.m. at Warner Park, according to Lancers coach Jim Pliner. Edgewood's Division 2 semifinal game will be played at the Bishop O'Connor Center -- home to the Crusaders' JV team on Madison's West Side -- at 5 p.m., according to Edgewood athletic secretary Barb Kolb.
With the Mallards home through Saturday, there could be a conflict again Wednesday for Edgewood, which -- if it beats McFarland -- would be poised to host the winner of the Lodi-Evansville semifinal. And that would be a game of keen statewide interest given that Edgewood is ranked fourth and Evansville ninth in Division 2.
La Follette, on the other hand, would hit the road if it beats Watertown. The winner of that game will play its regional final Friday at Fond du Lac in the upper half of the Beaver Dam bracket.
