Prep Talk: Success is everywhere you look in Deerfield

DEERFIELD -- The sun is shining, the prep baseball teams are taking their infield practice and another postseason installment of the Cambridge-Deerfield rivarly will be authored today in a WIAA Division 3 baseball regional semifinal.

But, as I sit here in my camping chair soaking in the late-afternoon sun, there is activity everywhere I look around Deerfield High school.

The two coaches -- Deerfield's Tom Davey and Cambridge's Adrian Flores -- and their captains are about to meet with the umpires at home play in advance of the 4:30 p.m. first pitch. Deerfield, ranked ninth in the Wisconsin Baseball  Coaches' Association Divison 3 state coaches poll, won a 5-4 meeting over the Blue Jays when they met in a non-conference game back on April 9.

I just came up from the track where our photographer Steve Apps took photos of Demons track and field athletes Stephanie Jahn, Amber Rogers, Charlie Reese and Zoe Page for a feature that will run later this week. The four girls have qualified for state in three relays -- the 400, the 800 and the 1,600 -- and were gearing up for their busy schedule in La Crosse. So are a bunch of state qualifiers from the boys team, which won the Division 3 Princeton sectional Friday.

To my right and up the hill Deerfield softball coach Barry Witkowski is addressing his team behind the backstop at the softball diamond. The softball Demons will play Thursday at Elroy against Orfordville Parkview in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal game in the Brookwood/Royall sectional. The winner of that contest plays the winner of the semifinal between La Crosse Aquinas and Lancaster for the sectional title.

So today is a busy day in Deerfield. But everyone who plays spring sports knows to appreciate it because, at this time of year, it can all be over just like that.
