UW women's basketball: Thanks for applying
By TOM ZIEMER
This information obviously isn't nearly as interesting as it would have been had the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team not moved so quickly to shore up its two assistant coaching openings.

But after a request, UW released the list of applicants for the two openings, which were filled by former Indiana coach Kathi Bennett and Cleveland State assistant Oties Epps.

Most of the 76 applicants -- there could have been more, though, because non-finalists are allowed to request confidentiality -- seemed to be assistants at NCAA Division II and III programs. I say seemed because there's no way to really verify who some of these people are short of calling them.

Here were some of the more interesting names that I found information on:

- Stacey Brunner, coach at Concordia in Mequon.
- Steve Drabyn, men's assistant at Lees-McRae (N.C.) and former Belmont player
- Carol Duncan, former Northwestern assistant and Purdue player
- David Houle, the former national high school coach of the year at Mountain View High in Orem, Utah
- Jonelle Streed, former Arizona assistant
