Saturday's scrimmage started with a field-goal session that was so bad, UW coach Bret Bielema stopped it after two missed attempts and a botched snap and made the players start over again.
It included a couple troublesome injuries to two of UW's best players, linebacker Jonathan Casillas (knee) and tight end Travis Beckum (hamstring).
There was a shanked pooch punt that may not have made it back to the line of scrimmage and a backup punter so shaky a defensive back was given a chance at the job.
It ended with offensive coordinator Paul Chryst clearly exasperated with the performance of all five quarterbacks.
It's a good thing the Badgers had two weeks after that to get ready for their first game, since they apparently will need it.
As I did last week following the first scrimmage, here are some leftover observations to come out of Scrimmage II -- The Bonus (given Bielema changed his original plan and allowed media inside for the second time in camp).
1, Coaches have to be concerned with the Beckum injury, given they spent four or five days slowly working him back onto the field after a hamstring injury. They could not have been more careful with him. Then, Beckum pulls up during a 7-on-7 passing drill and doesn't even make it to the scrimmage. The offense obviously needs a healthy Beckum, since the receiver position remains extremely unsettled.
2, Speaking of the receivers, after sophomore David Gilreath, the rest of the position is about as clear as mud. Sophomore Maurice Moore worked with the ones ahead of sophomore Kyle Jefferson, who remains something of an enigma. I'll have more on Jefferson this week but his play has left a lot to be desired.
3, Redshirt freshman John Clay must not have gotten the clear message from running backs coach John Settle, who told me after the scrimmage, "If John Clay doesn't get squared away, (walk-on Bradie Ewing) is pushing to be that third guy." Clay did not practice Monday morning, although his return looks close. Settle didn't sound like he was bluffing. The coaches like Ewing a lot and Clay has been out since spraining the ankle in the first scrimmage a week earlier.
4, So, how concerned should people be about the play of the quarterbacks? Chryst has been talking about consistency since camp started, so it's easy to see why he was just about at his wit's end on Saturday. Say what you want about Tyler Donovan, last year's starter. But the coaches knew exactly what they would get from him -- the good and bad. You get the feeling, the coaches aren't sure what to expect with senior Allan Evridge, and that's not something coaches like going into a season.
5, One good thing to come from the scrimmage is the cornerbacks were generally solid. Senior Allen Langford continues to make progress in his recovery from ACL surgery. to go with sophomore Niles Brinkley and redshirt freshman Mario Goins. All three split time with the No. 1 defense.
6, At least the kickers were better in the scrimmage than they were in the "rapid-fire" segment to start the practice. The practice started with Matt Fischer missing from 25 yards (wide right) and Philip Welch pulling his kick to the left from 23 yards. After a low snap on the next resulted in no kick, Bielema had them start the drill again. Both kickers went 2-for-4 the second time, and each missed one from inside 30 yards. Welch came back to drill a 47-yarder in the scrimmage and was just a few yards short from 56 yards, while Fischer connected from 35 and 30 yards. Don't be surprised, at least initially, to see Fischer handle extra points and everything inside 30 yards, while Welch handles 30-plus field-goal attempts and kickoffs.
