It sounded a little less likely on Monday night that senior linebacker Jonathan Casillas will be ready for the opening game against Akron. Casillas suffered a sprained knee in the scrimmage on Saturday and was expected to miss one to two weeks.

"He's probably going to be touch and go up to the game," UW coach Bret Bielema said after Monday night's practice. "I don't know if he'll get back there, but everybody else (in the two-deep should be ready)."

That means sophomore Blake Sorensen is likely to make his first start. He moved from the strong side to weak side just four days before Casillas was hurt.

"He by far had had the best camp of anyone in our two-deep that we really wanted to see improvement on," Bielema said. "We had made a comment the night before in a personnel meeting, with the way Blake was playing, he was really showing up, making a lot of plays. I'm excited to watch him play."

Bielema said tight end Travis Beckum, who aggravated his hamstring injury in 7-on-7 drills prior to the scrimmage, may not be fully cleared to return until the start of next week.

"What made the mistake with him, he jumped in there ... he got caught up in the energy and excitement," Bielema said. "We didn't want to quite get him into that position but he did, just kind of aggravated it again.

"We basically have made the decsion, even if he doesn't start (practicing) until game-week preparation, we'll be all right. Hopefully, Thursday and Friday he'll be involved in some sort of practice situations."

Defensive tackle Jasper Grimes injured his right ankle and will be out a couple weeks.

"Jasper's come a long way since he's been in this program," Bielema said. "We were excited. I think he was a guy that was right on the cusp of being in that rotation on the inside position. It was disappointing because I know he's worked very hard to get where he is."

Tight ends Garrett Graham (shoulder) and Mickey Turner (shoulder) have been practicing in green non-contact jerseys and are expected to be fully cleared next week.

Junior defensive end O'Brien Schofield returned to the morning practice, which was sooner than expected after suffering an ankle injury. He did some third-down work in the evening but did not do team situations when going against UW's offense.

"It's been amazing for him to get to where he is right now," Bielema said. "(We) really expect him to be full go when we start Akron prep from Wednesday (on)."

Bielema confirmed he still plans to name a starting quarterback on Wednesday when releasing an updated two-deep roster in the afternoon. The decision will rest with offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, in consultation with Bielema.

"It's a staff call," Bielema said. "Paul's the quarterback coach. I have never stepped in at any position. Last year, Paul and I had several conversations going into Tyler's (Donovan) announcement. We've had several conversations where we are right now. We always have big personnel meetings on Sundays, so we had a long one last night, all positions, offense, defense, special teams.
