UW football: Jones starting to stand out among receivers
Much has been made about the glut of tailbacks on the Badgers, but the depth at wide receiver is almost as good, although a bit more inexperienced.
The two most experienced receivers from last year are Kyle Jefferson and David Gilreath. Redshirt freshman Nick Toon has caught the ball well during spring practices, but his inexperience has also shown at times when he has lined up in the wrong spots. He spent last year working on the scout team while being redshirted. Sophomore Isaac Anderson, who was redshirted last year, has improved his strength and avoided, for now, the hamstring injuries that plagued him his first two years.
One receiver that has gone somewhat overlooked is sophomore Daven Jones, who contributed mostly on special teams last season after returning from a knee injury. Most fans remember his story, how he spent a semester in prep school and worked for a year out of high school to make himself eligible at UW.
"He's up (to) about 195, 196 (pounds)," Badgers coach Bret Bielema said. "When we recruited him out of high school, he was a guy that we were really excited about because we thought his potential down the line was really, really good.
"He's in better shape. He was away from football for really a year and a half. If you even remember the first couple of days (of camp last year), he was dropping balls. It just goes to show that if you are away from it, no matter how good of a football player you are, it can go away in a hurry.
"Just catching balls every day for him, he's a lot better at that. The thing about him is that he's got great size. Some of our wide receivers, Xavier (Harris), Maurice (Moore), are little guys. Daven is a big guy."
