UW football: Dealing with Moore and another D-line injury
UW football coach Bret Bielema was supposed to update the status of injured defensive lineman Dan Moore, who underwent further evaluation on Tuesday.
But there was little new information regarding Moore's knee injury, or his status, when Bielema talked to reporters near the end of Thursday morning's practice.
"The thing they got out of Tuesday was it wasn't as significant as they thought," Bielema said. "It isn't a clean slate, either. It's kind of a wait-and-see."
For now, Moore will undergo rehabilitation and no surgery, with hopes that he will be ready for summer conditioning in June.
"The plan is right now, they're going to basically take it easy on the knee for six weeks and, hopefully, he'll be able to return for the second week of June, when we go to full conditioning," Bielema said.
But Bielema did not rule out the chance of surgery at some point.
"He's just rehabbing, no surgery as of right now," Bielema said.
The defensive line suffered yet another injury when redshirt freshman defensive tackle Patrick Butrym missed the workout with a shoulder bruise. He could be back for Saturday's scrimmage.
"He couldn't even move it (Tuesday) but today he's got full motion," Bielema said. "Hopefully, he'll be a guy that can go Saturday."
That raised the total of defensive linemen sitting out practice due to injuries to eight.
The latest defensive line convert is sophomore Kenny Jones, a walk-on offensive lineman, who played defensive tackle on the second team. He was joined on the second team by Evan Millard, a converted linebacker who is listed at 217 pounds and spent a second practice as the No. 2 right end.
Former linebacker Josh Neal, who has also played fullback, played tackle with the No. 1 line, taking Butrym's spot.
"Bottom line, some of our threes are now ones," Bielema said of his defensive depth chart. "If you look at our D-line, you've got two former linebackers and an O-lineman that we converted just two days ago."
