Is your dog "friendly"?
Angela Troia

I was out walking my dog the other day when we went by a house with a U-Haul parked out front, and new neighbors moving in. There was a small dog out in the yard with them, who was running back and forth from the curb to the front door, "supervising" them while they unloaded the truck.

As Jake and I approached, I reeled him in to a heel, and the dog's owners asked me "Is your dog friendly?"  I hesitated, because the answer isn't a simple yes or no with Jake.  He loves people, and is very friendly with the people I introduce him to - maybe a little too friendly, for those who weren't expecting a wet nose in their face.  But he doesn't much care for other dogs, and he prefers to be the solo act in the center ring rather than romping in the park with his canine buddies.  Although I've trained him to tolerate the presence of other dogs, the situation we were in (Jake on a leash, the other dog running loose), was one that tends to make him anxious.

So when my new neighbors with the uncontrolled dog asked "Is your dog friendly?", what I told them was, "He's friendly where it counts."  And we kept on walking.
