The Wall Street Journal recently published an essay about health care reform by a British physician who compared health care for humans vs. dogs, and concluded that humans are getting the short end of the stick. He claims that dogs have a much better health care system, including:
- Being able see any doctor you choose
- Getting an appointment right away
- Getting treated right away
- No denial of treatment
- No bureaucracy
Another point mentioned in the online comments is that dogs have much better end-of-life care - there's no lingering in a canine nursing home for years on end. The one disadvantage for dogs? Payment is due at the time of service - but a vet bill is a lot easier to pony up for than a hospital bill. And I've noticed that while pediatricians no longer hand out lollipops, the vet always gives my dog a treat after a visit.
