Managing Editor Tim Kelley and I didn't get as many complaints yesterday about the Virginia Tech coverage as the sports department got about UW Coach Bielema's feelings about Notre Dame.
However, I thought it was an important moment. We put a story about questions of the play in the nation's media on our newspaper's front page and you can see the story and its companion forum here.
We have struggled during the past few days with how to play the news about the killer and the news about the victims. The first day we gave each prominent coverage. Thursday, we did give a lot of space to the news of the video and statement the killer, Cho Seung-Hui, sent to NBC news.
The video and our subsequent coverage drews some criticism -- about six emails.
At our house, we have been talking about this: the need to know about what exactly happened so we can process it versus the danger of feeding details to copy cat killers.
My own sense at this point is that Cho Seung-Hui was not thinking about coverage of his monstrous acts in the Wisconsin State Journal when he drew up his plan. And trying to deconstruct what was going through his mind is not helpful because those of us who are stable mentally cannot comprehend his break with reality. Yet providing information for our readers who want to understand the tragedy is an important job for the State Journal.
The State Journal strives to be respectful of victims and the dead. We'd love to hear your thoughts on how we are doing in the newspaper and on our web page, www.madison.com/wsj.
