We've learned a lot from the Web in the three years in which I've been editor. One of them is how precious your time is. The enhancements that will debut Jan. 7 in the State Journal reflect that.
I'd like to share the two key points that prompted me to commission the changes:
1. The State Journal does a magnificent job with breaking local news. Ask any media outlet, including bloggers such as me, who need their daily fix of our reporting for something to comment on! Without us, there'd be a lot of digital silence. Our new, more vibrant typeface and design plan will help our daily effort reflect more precisely that muscular character of our work.
2. We value your time. By reorganizing our paper and adding new ways of telling stories and sharing information, we will be honoring your efforts to make the most of your day in this most interesting south central region of Wisconsin.
We will explain this all in excruciating detail with a user's guide when the changes start in a couple of weeks. Watch for our call for volunteers to come to the newspaper and share your reactions to the enhancements.
In the meantime, please feel free to post here your dream changes for the ink-on-paper edition of the State Journal. We have a few things still in flux and you just never know when your stray thought could become an editor's brainstorm!
