On Campus: Sigma Chi can soon have alcohol at events again

UW-Madison’s chapter of Sigma Chi will be allowed to have alcohol at events starting in mid-October after the university reduced its punishment on the fraternity.

The fraternity was to be alcohol-free for most of the 2009-2010 academic year because it it allegedly twice violated Greek policies on alcohol use.

One charge involved the actions of a pledge at a chapter social held at a Downtown bar and the other involved unregulated alcohol at a house party.

The chapter successfully appealed the charge on the bar incident last week to the Offices of the Dean of Students, arguing its due process rights were violated.

The fraternity will now be on probation for seven weeks, ending Oct. 16. During that period, the organization may not have alcohol at any chapter events.

This is unrelated to an open police investigation into a reported sexual assault at the Sigma Chi house last October.
