On Campus: A new place to sleep on Aug. 14
UW-Madison’s student leaders are piloting a project this summer to deal with an annual problem: Where to sleep on the night of August 14?
Under most leases near campus, students must be out of their apartments on August 14, but can’t move into their new apartments until August 15.
This year, UW-Madison’s student government is providing a safe place for students to spend the night. Under a program called Move Out Night, the third and fourth floors of the student activities tower, 333 East Campus Mall, will be open for 24 hours beginning at 10 a.m. August 14.
That means no more sleeping in the car, in a couch on the lawn, or pulling an all-nighter at a diner.
But there are a couple of catches. The building will lock down at midnight (students can leave, but not re-enter) and alcohol is not allowed. There is capacity for 269 people, so student leaders are warning students to get there early to get a spot.
More details can be found here.
As for what to do with their worldly possessions? Students staying there can park in nearby university lots for free, which will be patrolled by UW Police, volunteers and special events staff.
