On Campus: UW-Madison has so far received $26.5 million in stimulus funding
By JANIE BOSCHMA
UW-Madison has so far received $26.5 million in federal stimulus money for 90 projects ranging from stem cell research and new genetic models for cancer to Antarctic weather stations and bioenergy.
UW-Madison expects to receive more money as such agencies as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation allot funding to thousands of proposals, said Kim Moreland, director of UW-Madison’s office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Madison faculty have submitted 705 proposals for more than $421 million.
“These funds will help us expand the margins of knowledge, of course, but they also represent a new source of support for our research infrastructure, which leads to well-paying jobs in our community,” said Provost Paul DeLuca.
The stimulus money will pay for supplies, equipment and salaries of teachers, technicians and student workers.
