On Campus: Laptops common at University of Wisconsin-Madison
Almost every student on the UW-Madison campus owns a laptop computer, according to a new survey.
The annual survey on technology use, which is conducted by the university’s Division of Information Technology, found that 93 percent of students own laptop computers, while 26 percent own desktop computers.
The survey, conducted last spring, was sent to a random sample of 1,200 undergraduate, graduate and profession students. Of those, 374 responded.
Other findings:
- Handheld web devices (i.e. iPhone, Blackberry) are not owned by a majority of students. Twenty-four percent reported owning one.
- Most students use Windows operating systems, not Mac. Seventy-three percent use Windows, compared to 33 percent who use Mac OS.
- Fifty-two percent of students admit to rarely or never backing up important data.
