Bill Cooney
Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: Bemowski's streak ends at State Am

BEAVER DAM -- Mukwonago's Mark Bemowski will miss the 36-hole cut at the 107th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship, meaning his streak of 40 straight made cuts in the event is over.

Bemowski shot a second-round 73 Tuesday at Old Hickory Golf Club and finished at 11-over 155. The cut will be at 10-over 154.

University of Wisconsin senior-to-be and former Middleton athlete Dan Zimmerman and Racine baker Ben Bendtsen III are the 36-hole leaders at 6-under 138.
