Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: Madison's Steinhofer derailed in U.S. Junior quarterfinals

Madison golfer Andrew Steinhofer had Dominic Bozelli on the ropes with three holes to go in their quarterfinal match of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.

But Steinhofer, who will be a senior this fall at Madison La Follette, bogeyed the last three holes of regulation as Bozzelli, who sandwiched two pars around an eagle at the par-5 17th, squared the match. Steinhofer then lost on the 19th hole after bogeying his fourth straight hole in sudden death.

It was a match of tournament underdogs coming out of the 36-hole medal-play qualifying earlier in the week as Bozzelli qualified 58th (72-79 -- 151) and Steinhofer qualified 63rd (76-76 -- 152). Steinhofer double-bogyed Nos. 4 and 5 and went 2-down after five holes only to win four of the next five holes to go 2-up.

He went 3-up with a par at No. 12 and, after giving a hole back at No. 14, went 3-up again with a birdie on No. 5. But that's where Steinhofer's round went south with consecutive bogeys that forced the extra hole.

Bozelli had won his first two matches 4-and-3 before dispatching Gaston De La Torre of Brush Prairie, Wash., 3-and-2 in the round of 16. Steinhofer won his first two matches 5-and-4 and 3-and-2 before rallying to beat local favorie Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala., 1-up in the round of 16.

The winner of this quarterfinal match will play the winner of the other quarterfinal in the lower bracket -- No. 3 seed Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash.  -- in the semifinals this afternoon at 1:15 p.m.

The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Saturday with the first round at 8 a.m. and the second round at 12:30 p.m.

Madison's Steinhofer rallies into U.S. Junior quarterfinals

It took some work, but Madison's Andrew Steinhofer overcame the hometown favorite Thursday afternoon and is off to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.

Steinhofer, 17, who will be a senior this fall at Madison La Follette, rallied from three holes down after six holes to beat Birmingham's Tom Lovelady, 1-up, in the tournament's match-play round of 16.

Lovelady won four of the first six holes to go 3-up on Steinhofer, who won No. 7 with a par and halved No. 8 with a birdie. Steinhofer won No. 13 with a par and 15 with a birdie to square the match before taking the lead for good with a birdie on No. 17 -- a hole Lovelady, who turned 15 Wednesday, bogeyed.

Earlier in the day, Steinhofer defeated Adam Sumrall of South Bend, Ind., 3 and 2.
