Bill Cooney
Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: UW's Woltman finishes 16th in Porter Cup

University of Wisconsin senior-to-be Dan Woltman tied for 16th place at the 50th annual Porter Cup recently in Lewiston, N.Y.

The Beaver Dam native finished at 2-over-par 282 (71-72-70-69), 12 shots back of champion Adam Mitchell in the 84-player field.

Marquette senior-to-be Mike Van Sickle took third, five shots back.

Woltman skipped the Wisconsin State Amateur at Old Hickory Golf Club -- the course he grew up on -- to play in the Porter Cup in an attempt to make the 2009 U.S. Walker Cup team.

Woltman will play in the 106th Western Amateur, beginning Monday, in Benton Harbor, Mich.
