Bill Cooney
Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: UPDATE: UW's Woltman to Sweet 16 in Western Amateur

Dan Woltman is headed to the Sweet 16.

Woltman, the University of Wisconsin senior-to-be from Beaver Dam, fired a two-round total of 1-under 139 Friday to qualify for match play in the 106th Western Amateur Championship in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Woltman shot a 1-over 71 Friday morning and needed to make up ground to crack the top 16 who would advance to match play on Saturday. He shot a 2-under 68 in his afternoon round to qualify on the number at even-par 280 for the tournament.

The medalist was New Zealand's Danny Lee at 12-under 268. Woltman, the 16th seed in match play, will face the top-seeded Lee in Saturday morning's first-round match.

Past winners of the Western Am include Jack Nicklaus (1961), Madison's Andy North (1971), Ben Crenshaw (1973), Phil Mickelson (1991), Justin Leonard (1992, 93) and Tiger Woods (1994).
