Bill Cooney
Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: UW's Woltman, Zimmerman qualify for U.S. Amateur

A pair of Badgers are headed to Pinehurst.

University of Wisconsin seniors-to-be Dan Woltman and Dan Zimmerman qualifed for the U.S. Amateur Championship Tuesday near Minneapolis.

Woltman finished first in the qualifier after a 4-under-par 67 in his second round to finish at 4-under 138.

Zimmerman finished at 147 (74-73) and earned the fifth and final spot after winning a three-man playoff.

The U.S. Amateur in August 18 to 24 in Pinehurst, N.C. The event will be played on the No. 2 and No. 4 course.

That likely means both will not be playing the Wisconsin State Open, Aug. 18 to 20.
