Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: Woltman to return to UW

University of Wisconsin senior and Beaver Dam native Dan Woltman will return to Madison for his final year of eligibility, UW men's assistant golf coach Brian Brodell confirmed Tuesday morning.

Woltman, who played in the U.S. Bank Championship and had a successful amateur summer season, had been pondering the possibility of turning professional.

Woltman is in the mix to be selected for the 2009 U.S. Walker Cup team and it appears that goal was a driving force in keeping his amateur status.

The Badgers open the fall season with the San Francisco Olympic Club Intercollegiate Friday and Saturday.

Brodell said the Badgers' top five players to begin the season are Woltman, fellow seniors Dan Zimmerman, Tyler Obermueller and Pat Duffy and junior Jordan Elsen.
