Bill Cooney
Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: Jones advances to first stage of PGA Q School

Garrett Jones is moving on in his quest to earn a spot on the PGA Tour.

The former University of Wisconsin golfer and mini-tour pro from Rewey advanced through the PGA Tour pre-qualifying of Qualifying School Friday at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

Jones finished at 11-under 277 in four rounds to take fifth place and advances to the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying.

Due to the large number of entrants in the past few years, the PGA Tour added a pre-qualifying stage to Q School. There is also a first, second and final stage.

The first stage begins toward the end of October. As always, even as the temperature cools down and football season heats up, we'll keep you updated.
