Baggot: My gut says Davidson so pick UW
By ANDY BAGGOT
608-252-6175
First impressions, second thoughts and the third degree:

The George Costanza approach to NCAA bracketology -- picking against my instincts no matter how strong after the first round -- may not be for everyone, but so far it has two great matchups awaiting the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team. ...

My instincts had the Badgers losing to Kansas State (the Michael Beasley factor) and Davidson falling to Georgetown (the Roy Hibbert factor) in the second round, so, of course, UW gets to mambo with Cinderella in the Sweet 16. ...

My instincts have Davidson prevailing (the Stephen Curry factor), so not only are the Badgers on track for the Final Four, that's where they will face Tony Bennett and Washington State in the national semifinals. ...

Hey, wouldn't it be great if Cinderella showed up in the Bowl Championship Series as many times as she does in the NCAA men's basketball tournament? ...

Give Bob Knight this: He's offered some compelling commentary for ESPN in its coverage of the NCAA men's tournament, including lavish praise for UW coach Bo Ryan, who "gets as much out of his players than any coach I've ever seen." ...

Knight isn't the first to suggest the tournament should be expanded, but the flurry of debate his 128-team format created ignores a simple premise: It won't happen as long as CBS televises the NCAA tournament and the Masters (re: Tiger Woods) because the two events are wedged right up against one another. ...

The most shocking on-field development out of Brewers spring training camp? That heady, do-everything pitcher Carlos Villanueva might not come to Milwaukee to start the season. ...

The most shocking off-the-field development out of Brewers camp? That first baseman Prince Fielder -- who looks like he views the Sausage Race not as casual competition, but as a sampler platter -- has converted to vegetarianism. ...

Sometimes it's fun to ponder what might have been. Before the Brewers gambled a bit and signed free agent Mike Cameron -- he'll play center field once his 25-game suspension for unauthorized drug use runs its course -- they reportedly talked to the Yankees about a trade for Johnny Damon. ...

Not to confuse a leisurely tavern skill with an actual sport, but the latest casualty in the war against performance-enhancing drugs is, believe it or not, German billiards champion Axel Buescher, who was suspended for testing positive for an agent that masks a PED. ...

News: ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney lists Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf among his five most influential figures in baseball, saying Reinsdorf and commissioner Bud Selig have a relationship similar to that of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in the White House. Views: The only apparent differences are that Selig and Reinsdorf have a better economic outlook and are drawing much bigger paychecks. ...

It's great that Brett Favre will have his No. 4 retired by the Packers -- he deserves it as much as anyone -- but let's leave it at that, OK? No statue like Vince Lombardi and Curly Lambeau because, frankly, it would send the wrong message to the others who have had their numbers retired in Green Bay.
