Madison Opera will stage a production in Capitol Theater next season in addition to two others in the company's home of Overture Hall.
Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte" will be performed March 13 and 15 in the 1,000-seat Capitol Theater, the first full Madison Opera production to be presented in that space. Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" will be performed Nov. 21 and 23 and Gounod's "Faust" on May 15 and 17, 2009, in the 2,100-seat Overture Hall.
"I've always thought (of Capitol Theater) as the ideal venue for Mozart," says Allan Naplan, Madison Opera's general director. "Mozart never thought of Overture Hall, could never have dreamed of these massive (auditoriums). A piece like Cosi Fan Tutte,'" an intimate comedy, "is well-served by the space."
Capitol Theater also will be home to five Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra "Masterworks" concerts next season. The WCO, known for its Concerts on the Square series each summer, will continue its annual Halloween and Middleton Holiday Pops tradition this fall and winter and present an all-Mozart "Blue Jeans" Family Concert on March 28.
The chamber orchestra's 2008-2009 concert roster includes guest artists Kyoko Takezawa, violin; cellist Amit Peled; harpist Yolanda Kondonassis with Eugenia Zukerman on flute; vocalists Robert Bracey, Timothy Jones and Natalie Fagnan; and pianist Paavali Jumppanen.
Madison Opera's November production of "Madama Butterfly" will feature soprano Maria Kanyova, who has starred with Lyric Opera of Chicago. Leonard Vordoni of the Metropolitan Opera music staff will conduct the production on an acclaimed, minimalist set by Japanese artist Jun Kaneko.
French stage director Bernard Uzan will direct "Faust." Laurent Campellone, who led the Madison Opera cast of "The Pearl Fishers" in 2007, will conduct. Madison Opera also will present Danielle de Niese in recital at the Union Theater Feb. 19.
