Lake Delton approves flood plain ordinance

LAKE DELTON -- The Lake Delton Village Board took another step Monday in getting the village back into the National Flood Insurance Program.

During the special meeting, the board approved an ordinance that would regulate flood plains in the village.

Village Attorney Richard Cross said the ordinance would adopt a 100-year floodplain boundary map drawn up by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The ordinance would require that buildings within those flood plains be constructed to withstand flooding.

To be a part of the National Flood Insurance Program and to receive FEMA funding, the village must have the ordinance in place.

The village let its membership in the program lapse in 2001 when a dispute over the elevation of the 100-year flood plain arose. The flood plain map approved Monday is the same one the village had in 2001.

Participation in the program allows residents to qualify for disaster assistance and allows home and business owners to buy federally subsidized flood insurance.

Because the village was dropped from the program, homeowners couldn't have purchased flood insurance even if they wanted to.

The village can now petition to get back into the program and the benefits of it would be retroactive to the June flooding.
