MCFARLAND — A McFarland fire official said today that recently used fireworks in a garage garbage can appear to have caused a house fire in the town of Pleasant Springs Monday night that displaced a family of six and destroyed the home.
Deputy Fire Chief Scott Miller said the house was engulfed in flames when fire crews got to the residence on Koshkonong Road just before 9:45 p.m. Monday. Authorities estimated the damage at $350,000.
Robbery victim shot
A 39-year-old Madison man was shot in the shoulder early Tuesday in an armed robbery in an apartment parking lot on Dexter Street.
Police said the victim met a woman outside a bar on Roth Street who asked him for a ride home. She directed him to the parking lot where two men, one armed with a handgun, demanded his wallet. As he was handing over his wallet, the gunman shot him in the shoulder.
The victim was taken to UW Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Pizzeria robbed
Two masked men, one with a handgun, robbed Falbo's Pizzeria at 406 S. Park St. South Park Street early Tuesday, police said.
Employees of the pizzeria reported an armed robbery around 2:41 a.m. Tuesday.
Jail inmate AWOL
Kimberlee A. Upright, a Dane County Jail inmate whose last known address is Pardeeville, was declared AWOL Tuesday after failing to return to the Dane County Ferris Center after a 1:30 p.m. appointment.
Upright is described as a 23-year-old white female, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Police said Upright has tattoos of a cross on her right shoulder, a teddy bear on her right calf and the word "juicy" on the back of her right shoulder.
Upright was serving two consecutive 60-day sentences, with work release, for car theft and misdemeanor bail jumping. Anyone with information on Upright's whereabouts is asked to call 911.
