125 pot plants found in home of dead man

Dane County Sheriff 's deputies discovered 125 marijuana plants and extensive equipment for a growing operation in the home of a 27-year-old town of Westport man found dead by his parents on July 4.

A search warrant return filed Monday in Dane County Circuit Court said police following up on the death were looking for any evidence of drug-dealing or first-degree reckless homicide. The filing also said Deputy Coroner Colleen Little found "no obvious trauma " to the body of the man, Travis Khazae, and police said evidence suggested he may have died from a drug overdose. An official cause of death is pending.

Khazae lived at 6065 Templeton Drive in a house he owned, the court filing said. His parents, Charlene and Ahamid Khazae, went to check on their son July 4 after not hearing from him for several days.

The court filing says Ahamid Khazae saw his son through a window lying unresponsive on a sofa, and his mother later broke into the house to get inside. Ahamid Khazae then dragged his son out of the house and tried unsuccessfully to revive him, police said.

Responding officers on July 4 went through the house to check for additional victims and found none, but did spot items including marijuana plants, lamps and soil inside two locked bedrooms they forced open, the filing said.

More equipment, including drying racks and fluorescent lighting, were found the same day in the home 's basement.

A subsequent search authorized by the warrant turned up additional marijuana plants and growing equipment, plus three bottles of steroids and other pills. Police also seized two cell phones, a computer and various paperwork to examine for evidence of drug-dealing transactions and any other individuals who could be involved, the filing said.

Police said Travis Khazae had convictions for disorderly conduct, battery and resisting arrest, with charges filed in early June alleging he beat his wife and a recent ticket issued for a hit-and-run crash.
