If you'd like to visit a native prairie, you might want to join a tour of the Smith-Egre Drumlin Prairie, scheduled for Sunday on a farm not far from Madison.
The prairie, protected by landowner Phyllis Reiner Smith on the family farm with the help of the Prairie Enthusiasts and the state Department of Natural Resources, is in summer bloom. Among the more spectacular plants is the dwarf blazing star.
The tour is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. this afternoon. Take Highway 12-18 east from Madison to Highway 73. Take Highway 73 south to Prairie Queen Road. Go east on Prairie Queen Road to Clearview Road and take it south 3⁄4 mile to the Reiner Smith farm at 2620 Clearview Road near Deerfield. The tour will be led by volunteers with the Prairie Enthusiasts and for those who have difficulty walking, there will be vehicles to transport them to the prairie.
