Fire crews are still on the scene of a fire that destroyed a two-story office building on the city's West Side early today.
Firefighters responded around 4 a.m.
to 5 Odana Court, near the 6300 block of Odana Road, for a fire at a building owned by Community Coordinated Child Care, or 4-C, said Lori Wirth, spokeswoman for the Madison Fire
Department.
"By the time our crews got there, it was through the roof." The flames were 20 to 40 feet in the air, Wirth said.
About 25 firefighters were on
the scene. Odana Road had to be closed until about 7:30 a.m. because water hoses needed to be run across the road, Wirth said.
No one was injured. No cause has been
determined.
"It's going to be a while before our investigators can really get in there," Wirth said.
One fire engine is expected to remain on the scene for much
of the day to monitor hot spots.
4-C, which certifies child-care providers and provides parents with child-care referrals, used the building for its Technical Assistance and Resource Center and as a place to train child-care providers, Wirth said. It also leased part of the building to Lutheran Social Services. Each agency employs about 25 people at that location, she said.
"Our investigator thinks (the building's) going to be a total loss," Wirth said. "There's not much left. We don't have a good estimate on content (damage) at this point." The structure was valued at $2.2 million.
