County Board OKs smoking ban
State Journal staff

MADISON — The Dane County Board voted Thursday night to enact a smoking ban in workplaces, including bars and restaurants, in towns in the county on Aug. 15, 2009.

The vote was 21-14 with one supervisor absent. The ordinance was amended to delay implementation from June 1.

Residents and supervisors spoke in favor of the ordinance and against it. Supporters cited the effects of second-hand smoke, while those who were against it spoke about its possible negative impact on businesses.

The ordinance is similar to Madison's, passed in 2004, which bans smoking in workplaces, including bars, restaurants and bowling alleys. Smoking bans also exist in the cities of Fitchburg and Middleton and the village of Shorewood Hills. A ban in Monona takes effect in June. Public smoking is allowed in the county's remaining 18 villages and the cities of Edgerton, Stoughton, Sun Prairie and Verona.
