Catching Up: Elderly carrier couple turning into celebrities
A couple of days after longtime newspaper carriers LaVerne and Beverly Maves were featured in an article in the Wisconsin State Journal, Beverly Maves said she received a phone call from a scheduling secretary with "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

The NBC television show wanted to fly the Edgerton couple to Burbank, Calif., to appear with Leno.

"I said I can't do that, " said Beverly Maves, 82. "I told her I didn't want to fly, and that was the end of that."

There was a more practical concern: "Who would do my route?" she asked.

Maves and her husband, who is 87, have delivered the State Journal almost every day for 54 years and continue to do so.

Life has been full of surprises since the Oct. 30 article, Maves said. She has been interviewed on radio programs from Iowa to Michigan to Massachusetts, including Sirius Satellite Radio in New York.

"I do all the talking," she said. "LaVerne's not a talker."

People have been kind. One customer sent $20.

"Mom has been overwhelmed with it," said Keith Maves, a son who lives with the couple. "We didn't expect to get this kind of response."

"Good Morning America," the ABC television show, has been in contact with the couple about coming to Edgerton. So far, the filming has not happened. If it never does, that's OK, Beverly Maves said.

"I was queen for a day, and that's enough."
