Developer Gary Gorman's $29,000 offer to buy and renovate the old Red Brick School as his new corporate headquarters has been accepted by the Oregon School Board.
"I am excited about it. It gives us an opportunity to have a space with some character," Gorman said. "It's consistent with what we do for a living. We specialize in urban renaissance, so we found a space consistent with that. I want to bring back some historical artifacts, like graduation photos, or a school flag, anything that will make it warm. I have relatives who went to school there. My dad (Phil Gorman), who's 84, remembers going to see his uncle play basketball there in the 1930s."
The 19,000-square-foot building, built in 1922, is at 220 N. Main St., a few blocks north of the village's downtown and adjacent to Netherwood Knoll Elementary and the school district office. Gorman said it will replace leased offices at 1244 S. Park St., which Gorman and Co.'s approximately 35 employees have outgrown.
Gorman said he'll enjoy breathing new life into the old building. "I've had people call me up and say, I want that brick I scratched my name on in 1946," he said.
