Catching Up: No buyer yet for Bancroft Dairy building

The former Bancroft Dairy at the corner of Fish Hatchery Road and Park Street, which closed in 2004, is still for sale but no serious buyers have appeared, officials said.

The dairy site includes parcels at 1010 and 1102 S. Park St. and last operated under the Dean Foods Morningstar label. Dean bought the dairy in 1988. It currently is owned by Suiza Foods Corp. of Dallas.

"That property is for sale and we are looking for a buyer. I don't have any other information at this time," said Marguerite Copel, a company spokeswoman.

Harold Ginsburg, the real estate representative for the owners, said he would not comment on Suiza's asking price. "We've had a lot of people express interest in the property," both nationally and locally, Ginsburg said.

The vacant dairy was part of the Wingra Creek Market Study, a comprehensive plan approved by the City Council in March for a 64-acre triangular-shaped area on the city's South Side. The plan would maintain Park Street as a commercial and business corridor, with Fish Hatchery Road remaining more of a residential area. Park Street from the Beltline to the UW-Madison campus has been suggested as a possible route for a trolley line.

The plan identifies the dairy site as a possible location for a hotel to serve the nearby Meriter and St. Mary's hospitals.

"There are rumors that someone is interested in turning that site into a motel and has spoken with the hospitals in that area to see if there would be a market for hotel rooms on Park Street," said Peggy Yessa of the city Office of Business Resources. "But nothing has been submitted to the city to rezone it or for building permits."
