Kurt Schlicht would inject a good dose of common sense into Dane County Board discussions.
Voters should elect him to an open seat in western Dane County's District 28.
Schlicht, 44, of Cross Plains, owns a local tavern and has served two terms on the Cross Plains Village Board. His experience as a small businessman and local leader should help him keep careful watch over county spending.
Schlicht wants to promote measured growth to help the economy in western Dane County. He fears the county is trying to override careful local land-use planning by his village and nearby communities.
Schlicht has expressed strong opposition to a Regional Transportation Authority funded by a higher sales tax. Yet he's receptive to a commuter train through Madison if it extends as far west as Mazomanie.
Schlicht would be wise to keep an open mind on transportation options. The region needs to work together to find efficient and cost-effective solutions.
Schlicht's opponent, Susan Beil, 55, a homemaker, union official and school board member in the town of Mazomanie, is capable and committed to regional cooperation.
Yet Schlicht 's transparent style and local advocacy make him the better choice.
