Foley: Monster-sized effort helps slay Frankenstein
ELLEN FOLEY
Wisconsin voters struck down the "Frankenstein" veto Tuesday and sent the message that Wisconsin supports good government.

I am very proud of our fellow citizens for taking the time to understand the complicated veto-gone-berserk that allowed governors to rewrite legislation by cobbling together unrelated words and figures in state budgets. This compromised the balance of power between executive and legislative branches of state government.

I am also extremely proud of our editorial staff, which campaigned for more than a year to get the issue in front of voters. Opinion page editor Scott Milfred, freelance cartoonist and artist Phil Hands and editorial writer Charles Martin hammered away in provocative and engaging ways. They used old-fashioned tools, such as the unsigned editorial, and new tools on the Web, including a video of one of the hearings at which Frankenstein appeared. (It was actually Hands in a Halloween mask from his childhood.)

I spend a lot of time reading trade publications about how the news business is devoid of relevance, particularly for younger readers. This is hogwash. The Frankenstein campaign trumpets the State Journal 's commitment to shine the big spotlight on problems that readers young and old care about.

Milfred and Co. showed us there 's no going back to a reliance on print only. The Wisconsin State Journal constantly rededicates itself to new ways of doing journalism in the newspaper and at our Web site, madison.com/wsj.

On a personal note, many of you have called or e-mailed about why I am not writing more columns or why I am not answering your e-mails as quickly. My husband, Tom, is fighting a rare form of non-Hodgkin 's lymphoma. In the cancer community, we call this a "journey. "

Since Feb. 5, Tom has undergone rigorous chemotherapy that we hope ends about May 1. He is likely to have radiation treatments in June. Tom has excellent doctors at UW Hospital with Dr. Brad Kahl in the lead. The experts tell me that lymphoma is on the rise, and it is particularly virulent in the Midwest. We are grateful that UW Hospital has special expertise.

We have a Web site on caringbridge.org. I recommend that tool to anyone with a loved one who is sick. We designed it for family, friends and supporters. If you 'd like to join our caringbridge, you can e-mail me or chat with just about any journalist at the State Journal who can give you the Web site name so you can get access.

I have temporarily left behind the 12-hour days so my response to your call or e-mail may slow a bit. I continue to converse with Scott and other editors about the great journalism we are cooking up for you.

On the editorial page, we believe that the veto power of the governor still has more leeway than needed. We are also studying and opining about the process by which we choose state Supreme Court justices. Stay tuned. Milfred and Co. are on the prowl.
