Views: Hillary under fire; Dane County Board and Monona races

Remarks reveal lack of character

Sen. Hillary Clinto 's Bosnian lie insulted every service member who has been or will be in danger -- the real kind, the kind Clinton didn't experience. Has she lived such a sheltered life that she doesn't know the difference between real and imagined danger? Commander-in-chief material? I think not.

There are plenty of women ready to be president, but Hillary Clinton is not one of them. Her resume is weak, her personality is caustic, she will attempt to destroy anyone who disagrees with her, and she doesn't know the difference between an honest mistake and a bold-faced lie.

I don't know which is sadder, that she thinks we're stupid enough to let her get away with her behavior, or that some people still support her regardless of her behavior. Democrats -- wake up!

The "right wing conspiracy" is not out to get her -- her own lack of character is.

Ferrell knows and likes District 15

Do you want to be represented by a candidate who depicts your neighborhood as crime-ridden, traffic-congested and exhaust fume-covered Downtown Madison? Or as picturesque, diverse neighborhoods of schools, stores and businesses with plenty of green space, as Dane County District 15 candidate Ronn Ferrell sees it?

Ferrell is a long-time resident and a family man, school parent and a neighborhood friend, who has served as a sports official for 25 years. He's a business owner and has political experience serving on the Madison City Council.

Ferrell is president of the Highland Village Homeowners Association and has been a member for years. He knows the neighborhood and its businesses, and we are the people he listens to. He will represent us on the County Board.

He will focus on prioritizing county needs, not wants. He'll focus on fiscal responsibility, cooperation between Dane County and Madison, district residents and neighborhood associations. He'll work with the sheriff's office to better protect us.

Ferrell has been a knowledgeable, positive, participating District 15 resident, and will not change those qualities as a County Board supervisor.

Veldran has earned another board term

Dane County Board District 7 Sup. Matt Veldran is doing a great job and should be re-elected.

Veldran's opponent seems to be building his campaign around running against Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney over electronic monitoring. Blasting away at our sheriff is shortsighted and won't deal with our district's problems with crime.

Veldran supports a comprehensive approach to neighborhood safety through efficiencies. That translates into more deputies to complement Madison and Fitchburg's police force efforts, increased funding for the Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force, improved and expanded neighborhood-based human services to tackle poverty and related crime problems, and fully funding new job training programs.

Veldran understands our district and deserves to be re-elected.

Veldran's view of monitoring disturbs

Dane County District 7 incumbent Sup. Matt Veldran says jail inmates being released into our neighborhoods with ankle bracelets are already "in the community" on work release.

But Huber work-release privileges mean inmates are sent to a job during the day, then they return to secure detention overnight. That is quite different than being set loose into our communities at night, when most of the trouble occurs.

Ankle bracelets probably do have a place, but not to quadruple the number of inmates being set loose. This whole process smacks more of cutting law enforcement at the expense of lesser priorities.

Put Wiswell back on Monona City Council

Jeff Wiswell has been a tireless worker on the Monona City Council. He vigorously supported retaining our 9-1-1 emergency dispatch center. He supported creation of a new law enforcement computer record system and new portable digital radio system, both the greater compatibility among area localities.

He supported placing a mobile video camera in one of our patrol cars, and made the motion to table the purchase of Tasers until further study was received from the Justice Department.

Monona's future is at a crossroads but can be brighter than ever.

As our representative, Wiswell will continue to be vigilant in keeping our city's fiscal house in order and deliver basic city services at an affordable price with reasonable taxation. He will also keep the focus on public safety efforts.
